Some patients may joke they have an allergic reaction to their dentist as an excuse for not going to their appointment. There are, however, dental allergies that patients may experience. Often these allergies are caused by certain materials used by the dentist; one of these is latex. In case you experience any of the following conditions, make certain you disclose this information to your dentist before your upcoming consultation.
Can I Be Allergic to Latex?
Certain proteins found in latex products may cause the body to react. The body responds as if the protein is dangerous and, as a result, antibodies are released by the immune system to fight it off. Chemicals such as histamine circulate within the bloodstream, causing an allergic reaction.
Signs of a latex allergy may include:
- •Itchy, red skin and/or eyes
- •Rash or hives
- •Raspy throat
- •Sneezing
These reactions are among the more moderate to a latex allergy. A patient may experience more intense symptoms, known as anaphylaxis. The signs of anaphylaxis are immediate and may be fatal. Get emergency medical care if you experience the following symptoms:
- •Unsteadiness
- •Nausea and sickness
- •Confusion
- •Loss of awareness
- •Unstable pulse
